Potter’s Wheel.... is a missional community of Spiritual Formation pursuing a deep, intimate relationship with God that will transform our lives and equip us to be vessels of God’s love to those our lives encounter.
What is a missional community? A “missional community” is a “group of people, about the size of an extended family, doing the mission of God together outside the regular confines of the church building.” “Launching Missional Communities” Breen & Absalom 2010, pg. 12 A missional community begins with multiplication in mind. It is a model that tends to grow slowly. The size of a missional community generally runs from about 20 to 50 people. When it gets to about 70 or so it replicates and becomes two communities.
What is spiritual formation? As followers of Jesus Christ we are called to constantly be formed into the likeness of Christ. Spiritual formation includes areas such as prayer, the study of scripture, spiritual direction, solitude, worship and other spiritual disciplines.
So how might these two things fit together in the life of Potter’s Wheel? The smaller size of a missional community provides a church community setting where spiritual formation can be lived out together to nurture the faith and life walk of those participating. It is a framework that encourages relationships that draw people together and into deep discipleship with Jesus Christ. Daily prayer practices, opportunities for times of solitude as well as times of community shared around a meal will be among some of the intentional faith rhythms that knit lives together. As our number grows services of worship will begin. Potter’s Wheel will be a multigenerational community of individuals and families where the focus will be on the practices of spiritual formation that will nurture deep and growing lives committed to Jesus Christ, journeying with other disciples to further the Kingdom. One group we hope to reach is the large number of unmarried people in the Kansas City area. In the Kansas City metro communities of Prairie Village, Overland Park, Roeland Park and Kansas City Missouri the percentage of unmarried people are 40, 42, 44, and 55 percent respectively. The representation of this group in most churches isn’t nearly equivalent. The framework of a missional community would be inviting to unmarried people but in no way exclusive to unmarrieds.
As we begin… The first step on this journey will be to gather a group of people who are willing to come together to pray for God’s further direction for Potter’s Wheel. The hope is that we would gather for a weekly meal and time just to pray together, seeking the Lord and what God wants next in this journey. We have one person who has agreed to open their home for such gatherings and we’d like to have one more. There’s no commitment at this point other than a willingness to pray for God’s clear guidance for this community. If you would be interested please contact Mary Rowlands at Mary@PottersWheelKC.org.
